Society supports Dokotoral Symposia in Tübingen, April 7-9 2025, and Vienna, May 8-10 2025
The Gesellschaft für Kognitionswissenschaft supports two further Doctoral Symposia:
Doctoral Symposium on Understanding Context in Cognition at the University of Tübingen,
April 7th – 9th, 2025
Topic: Understanding Context in Cognition
Organizers: Ghada Hassan, Johanna Theuer, Max Mittenbühler, Mudar Adas, and Polina Tsvilodub
The notion of context is a central theme across all disciplines of cognitive science, yet it is often defined differently, and cross-disciplinary dialogue remains limited. This symposium aims to bring together early-career researchers to get to know the community, look at the topic from different angles, discuss, and be inspired.
We cordially invite PhD students to participate in the Cognitive Science PhD-Symposium on the topic “Understanding Context in Cognition”, a 2.5-day event taking place on April 7–9, 2025, at the University of Tübingen. The symposium brings together Cognitive Science PhD students from across Germany to delve into the interdisciplinary topic of context, connecting research across domains including event cognition, Artificial Intelligence, linguistics, cognitive modelling, psychology, and education.
Participants will have opportunities to share their research through presentations, engage in discussions and networking with both peers and leading senior researchers in the field. Featuring invited keynote talks, hands-on workshops on computational cognitive modelling, large language models (LLMs), neurophysiological methods, and grant proposal writing, the symposium will provide opportunities to both strengthen methodological skills and engage with leading research in the field.
Don’t miss this opportunity to engage in collaborative tasks, exchange ideas, and connect with peers to shape the future of Cognitive Science in Germany! You will have many opportunities to engage in interactive workshops with hands-on experiences, enjoy keynote talks by experts in the field, receive valuable feedback on your own work (oral presentation or a poster), collaborate in a hackathon-style project challenge to develop creative interdisciplinary solutions, and network with fellow PhD students, postdocs, and professors across Germany.
Registration is now open!

Doctoral Symposium on Future Thinking at the University of Vienna,
May 8th-10th, 2025
Topic: From Minds to Movements: Foresight in cognition and activism
Organizers: Ohan Hominis (CEU), Maria Fedorova (UniVie), Xueyi Yao (CEU), Bojin Zhu (UniVie)
We are announcing a PhD symposium on Future Thinking on May 8th 2025 – May 10th 2025, in the University of Vienna.
The 1st day of the conference will focus on theory, covering empirical and philosophical research on cognition and its interpretations. The 2nd day will focus on various political, social and epistemic issues considered through the lens of empirical research. On the 3rd day, the conference will be cantered around future directions of research in cognitive science, and its broader implications, based on the work presented during the first two days.
The conference will coincide with the Cognitive Science Hub’s Annual Lecture which will take place in the Großer Festsaal on one of the two nights of the symposium. The participants of the conference will also be invited to attend the lecture and the proceeding reception.
Throughout the conference, we will cover the following topics: Conceptual change, Predictive Processing, Anticipation and Perception, Uncertainty and Reasoning, Activism in Science, Epistemic Trust, Addressing Climate Change, & The Erosion of Democracy
Interested parties can add their email address here to directly receive the call for papers which will be sent out at the beginning of February (submission deadline March 10th).
